The Impact of Loss
Whether your loss is recent or was some time ago, grief can’t be rushed and it doesn’t follow a schedule.
At Compassion Waves Partnership, we understand that reaching out for support can take courage, so please feel free to explore our site until you feel ready.
The impacts of loss can include:
Psychological effects
Grief can affect the way you think, feel and make sense of the world around you. You may experience shock, disbelief, numbness, anxiety, panic or moments when your emotions feel overwhelming. You may notice difficulties with memory and concentration, sometimes described as ‘grief fog’. These responses can be unsettling, but they are understandable responses to loss.
Physiological effects
Grief can cause changes in your sleep or appetite; you may experience symptoms such as chest tightness, headaches or digestive discomfort. It’s important to be gentle with yourself and recognise that your body, as well as your mind, may need time and care as you adjust to your loss.
(Please note, physical symptoms can also have other causes, so persistent, severe or concerning symptoms should be assessed by a healthcare professional.)
Impact on identity
Losing a loved one can change how you see yourself and your place in the world. You might find it difficult to imagine a future that looks different to the one you expected, or struggle to find meaning in everyday life. You do not need to have all the answers or know who you are becoming just yet. Finding your way through these changes takes time, and we can support you in this process.
Impact on relationships
Grief can change your relationships in unexpected ways. You may find that some friends and family members offer comfort and understanding, while others struggle to know what to say, how best to support you or even recognise your depth of loss. You may experience some tension or misunderstandings if there are people around you who grieve differently. You are allowed to have your own needs and feelings, even when they differ from those around you. Learning to express what you need, communicate your boundaries and navigate changing relationships can help you feel more supported, without feeling guilty for grieving in your own way.
There is hope and you don’t have to navigate grief alone
Although grief can leave you feeling uncertain about the future, you don’t have to find your way through it alone.
Compassion Waves Partnership offers a safe, compassionate and personalised space to explore how your loss may be affecting you emotionally, physically and in your relationships, and gently explore what moving forward might look like for you.
